Work in the community is a vital part of the mission of the Garden Club through participating in public and civic community events. We offer friendship and camaraderie to newcomers all the while educating ourselves on gardening and environmental concerns. Members work in small groups on projects of their choice sharing their own experiences and learning from others. And we partner with outside organizations to increase awareness of environmental issues and provide a public presence for the garden club.

Blue Star Marker

The Blue Star Program honors all men and women that serve in the United States Armed Services.  The program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II.  In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now NGC, Inc.) adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway system that covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii.  Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers were placed along the way.  The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters in the military.

Plant America, Feed America

The National Garden Clubs (NGC) has called on all clubs to grow vegetables, fruits or other food items to donate to a local food bank in an effort to “Feed America”.  Our plan is to coordinate efforts with a local church to design, build and maintain a garden for this purpose.

Monthly Food Drive

In conjunction with the Plant America, Feed America program, our club will continue to hold a monthly food drive.  Donations can be made of food items, pet foods, non-food necessities, and cash.  Our monthly intake is 159 pounds and $208 in cash.

Library Garden

The garden club maintains the butterfly garden which is a designated Monarch Waystation.  Each month the club gets together to weed and replenish as needed.  In the spring, we hold our annual butterfly release where we release about 300 Painted Lady butterflies.

Penny Pines

NGC and the USDA Forest Service are proud to have formed a partnership sustaining our national and urban forests through this reforestation/forest education program. Our club participates in a meaningful and practical conservation project by contributing $68.00 to a Penny Pines plantation as part of the costs of replanting replacement trees indigenous to a particular damaged area. Whether by fire or by other natural catastrophe, pine trees and other trees are replaced.
